Emerald EyeCare Conducts Vision Education at Thomas Elementary in Dublin

Eye care is an important issue to elementary school students because studies show that 80% of what’s learned at school is learned through the eyes.  It’s estimated that one in four children has an undetected eye problem in our schools, which is why raising the awareness of eye health and vision clarity is an issue close to Dr. Kathleen Murphy’s heart.

“If a child is accustomed to seeing things blurry,” states Dr. Murphy, “that child does not know there is a vision problem.  What the Real Eyes Program does is raise awareness of eye health and vision issues in a way that makes it a fun learning experience for the children.”

The Real Eyes Educational Program is sponsored by the Ohio Optometric Association as a way to raise awareness of eye health among school children and provide a means for members to be involved in the community.  There are two tracks of the program, one for K-2 and the other for grades 3-5.

“I love to teach,” continued Dr. Murphy. “The Real Eyes materials and video provide great tools and the kids love it.  I just enjoy being able to be involved with the kids and give back a little.”

Each year for the last four years, Dr. Murphy takes three to five days out to teach the program to various classes at Thomas Elementary School in Dublin.  The days have been great “practical science” learning experiences for the children and a lot of fun for Dr. Murphy.
